Mr. Lekan Fatodu is a distinguished development expert, public policy strategist, and journalist, currently serving as the Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission. His appointment reflects Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s trust in his capability to rejuvenate Lagos State’s sports sector through transformative initiatives, international partnerships, and a commitment to utilising sports as a catalyst for societal well-being and economic growth.
With over two decades of outstanding experience in international development, strategic communications, and diplomacy, Fatodu brings a unique blend of expertise and passion to his role. His credentials as a development professional and a sports enthusiast position him to lead the Commission into a new era of innovation and excellence.
Before his appointment, Mr. Fatodu served as the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Governor Sanwo-Olu on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), where he spearheaded diverse programmes addressing key areas such as poverty reduction, environmental sustainability, and social equity. His leadership significantly advanced the delivery of the SDGs in Lagos State through impactful planning and implementation of critical initiatives.
As the previous lead consultant at CheckOut Communications, a strategic communications and development solutions firm, Fatodu played an instrumental role in launching the Africa Shapers Initiative – a platform for stimulating collaboration between established and emerging entrepreneurs across Africa. Among his notable achievements was convening the first-ever African roundtable on business and sustainable development at the British House of Parliament in 2017. This high-level event brought together influential figures, including Mr. Iain Stewart, the Private Parliamentary Secretary for International Trade, and Mr. John Howell, then the British Prime Minister’s Ambassador for Trade to Nigeria.
Fatodu’s extensive global network has been pivotal in attracting international development opportunities and resources to Nigeria, enabling the country to address its challenges with enhanced capacity and expertise. His contributions to sustainable development and public service have earned him international recognition, including the Most Outstanding Entrepreneur award by Strides Media UK (2011) and the Outstanding Achievement and Exemplary Public Endeavours award from the University of Lagos Alumni Association, Lagos State Chapter (2014).
An alumnus of the University of Lagos, Nigeria, where he obtained a degree in Mass Communication, Mr. Fatodu further furthered his academic education with a master’s degree in Diplomatic Studies from the University of Westminster, London.
With his global perspective and visionary leadership, Fatodu seeks to drive transformative progress in Lagos and Nigeria’s sports ecosystem.
